SNAP

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP helps low-income and temporarily unemployed people purchase nutritious foods. An individual or a family may be eligible for SNAP even if they own a home, don’t have a mailing address or are undocumented.

CHIP/Children’s Medicaid

Medicaid and the Children’s Healthy Insurance Program help cover medical expenses for children, some adults and people with disabilities who meet income requirements. Most services are delivered through providers called managed organizations.

• Children’s Health Insurance Program is low-cost or free health coverage for children without health insurance.
• Children’s Medicaid covers services needed to keep kids healthy. It is for people 18 and younger healthy who come from families with little or no money.
• Long-term care Medicaid is available to some people who are older or who have a disability.
• Medicaid might be available to adults who are caring for a child.

Who can get Children’s Medicaid or CHIP:

• Children in Texas without health insurance might be able to get low-cost or free health coverage through Children’s Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
• Children’s Medicaid is a health care program for children in low-income families. CHIP is a health care program for children whose families earn too much to get Medicaid but cannot afford health insurance.
• To get Medicaid or CHIP, a child must be age 18 and younger (in some cases children with disabilities age 19 and 20 can get Medicaid). They must also be a Texas resident and a U.S. citizen or qualified non-citizen.

TANF

The Texas Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, is a support service for Texas families. The purpose of TANF is to provide financial and medical assistance to needy dependent children and the parents or relatives with whom they are living. Eligible TANF households receive monthly cash and Medicaid benefits. TANF uses state funds to provide cash assistance to families with two parents who both receive benefits with children deprived of parental support because of the unemployment or underemployment of a parent.

WOMEN’S HEALTH PROGRAM

Healthy Texas Women is dedicated to offering women’s health and family planning services at no cost to eligible women in Texas. This care helps women plan their families, whether they seek to achieve, postpone, or prevent pregnancy. It also can have a positive effect on future pregnancy planning and general health.

Beginning Sept. 1, 2020, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission is implementing Healthy Texas Women Plus, an enhanced, cost-effective and limited postpartum services package for women enrolled in the Healthy Texas Women program.

You can receive these benefits if you:

• Are a woman between the ages of 18 to 44 years old.
• Are a woman between the ages of 15 to 17 years old and have a parent or legal guardian apply, renew, and report changes to your case on your behalf
• Are a U.S. citizen or legal immigrant.
• Are a resident of Texas.
• Don’t have health insurance.
• Are not pregnant.
• Meet the following income requirements:

Healthy Texas Women provides a variety of women’s health and family planning services, including:

• Pregnancy testing
• Pelvic examinations
• Sexually transmitted infection services
• Breast and cervical cancer screenings
• Clinical breast examination
• Mammograms
• Screening and treatment for cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure
• HIV screening
• Long-acting reversible contraceptives
• Oral contraceptive pills
• Permanent sterilization
• Other contraceptive methods such as condoms, diaphragm, vaginal spermicide, and injections
• Screening and treatment for postpartum depression

MEDICARE

What is Medicare

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for:

• People who are 65 or older
• Certain younger people with disabilities
• People with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD)

The different parts of Medicare help cover specific services:

• Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
  Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
